KRISTALLEN KLANKSCHALEN - CRYSTAL BOWL - CHRYSTAL BOWL - QUARTZ BOWL

klik voor grote afbeelding

Our Crystal Singing bowls are made from pure powdered quartz crystals which are heated to several thousand degrees. The heating integrates the individual particles of the quartz powder and a bowl is formed. They are then individually tuned to a specific musical note. The size of the bowl affects the pitch: a small bowl produces a much higher pitched note than the note produced by a large bowl. In general higher pitches have an uplifting, cleansing effect whilst lower pitches tend to be more relaxing and grounding. We all respond differently to particular sounds, and so the effect on individuals of the same bowl can be quite different.

When two or more Crystal Bowls are sounded together, the sound waves emitted weave and mingle with each other to form beautiful flowing harmonics. These harmonics surround us and the vibrations will have different effects on different people depending what is happening in their lives. In therapy, the healing tones of the Quartz Crystal Bowls are mainly used to help re-balance and harmonise.

It is best for you and anyone in the proximity of the bowl if you don't play it for longer than 15 - 20 minutes at a stretch. A 15 minute break is recommended - this is to ensure that the energy field is not overloaded with energy and everyone has a chance to assimilate the changes. Players often forget that they are also receiving an energy treatment! Always have the highest intention in your mind at the outset of playing as the bowl becomes an extension of you while you play it.

You may request a bowl tuned to a particular chakra. Smaller crystal bowls have a high tone and octave. Larger ones have a deeper tone and lower octave.

First Chakra Root - Note C
Second Chakra Sacral - Note D
Third Chakra Navel - Note E
Fourth Heart - Note F
Fifth Throat- Note G
Sixth Third Eye - Note A
Seventh Crown - Note B

About notes: When you order any note bowl you may receive a flat or a sharp in that note.

HEALING CRYSTAL BOWLS WITH HANDLE

Frosted bowls are the more traditional, and heavier, thicker bowls for deepest, strongest resonance.
Clear bowls are lighter weight, easier to hold or travel with.
All "Heaing Bowls with Handle" feature a special easy grip handle filled with colored gemstones.

How to play Quartz Crystal Singing Bowls
Place the bowl symmetrically on its rubber ring. This helps to keep the bowl steady without dampening the vibration. Run the suede stick around the outside (not inside) of the rim gently, evenly and with a firm pressure and the bowl will start to resonate. If you are producing jarring or rough tones you are moving the stick too quickly or using incorrect pressure against the rim. Excessive force or speed will produce unpleasant sounds and could damage a bowl even to the point of shattering. Never play a bowl so fast that the outer rim becomes blurred.

On rare occasions and not always for any apparent reason quartz bowls have been known to shatter while they are being played. All quartz bowls are susceptible to this. However there are steps that you can take to minimise the risk of it happening to you.

  • Never play the bowl with excessive force
  • Do not hit the bowl with the stick. Tap lightly if you need to.
  • Carry it with your arms around it to protect it from walls and furniture.
  • Keep your bowls a foot apart from each other when playing.
  • Do not play a very large bowl in a very tiny room.
  • Play on the outside of the rim and not on the inside. Playing on the inside appears to increase the stress placed on the bowl.
  • Because shattering is a possibility never place your head in the bowl when it is resonating or place the bowl on top of someone when playing.

All our bowls are supplied with a ring and a playing stick.

HARMONIUM - COMPACTINA - SHRUTI BOX - SRUTI BOX - SURPETI - SWAR PETHI

HARMONIUM - COMPACTINA

HISTORY & CONSTRUCTION

The harmonium was originally introduced to India as a mobile substitute for the organ by Christian missionaries. Because of its easy handling, it not only developed into a popular instrument of Indian folk and religious music but became firmly established as an accompanying instrument in classical North Indian Raga music. The harmonium is, in principle, an closed wooden box into which air is blown by means of manual bellows. Via a keyboard, small holes in this box are caused to open. Thus the compressed air can escape through them. The air is set vibrating by a small metal plate placed in the opening (the so-called reed) - the same mechanism of sound generation as the accordion.

PALOMA COMPACTINA D39-4

Paloma Compactina Paloma's Compactina D 39-4 is by far our smallest and lightest harmonium model - even without any folding mechanism it is only half as deep as the simplest standard harmoniums and nearly 2 kgs lighter! It can be carried under one arm and is easily stored away. All that is achieved just by intelligent construction, without the slightest compromise in the typical Paloma sound quality or playability. Its unique charm is further enriched by the attractive design and surface finishing: Instead of the usual glossy shellac polish all surfaces have been treated with wax in order to enhance the beauty of the natural wood veining. The focus on noble natural beauty is evident in the tasteful selection and composition of decorative elements as well. Assembly is done with utmost care for detail at a quality level way beyond common Indian standards.

Paloma Compactina is ideal for demanding musicians in need of a light and compact high quality instrument with full tonal range, round warm sound and an exquisite visual appearance. Its 39 keys give a range of three octaves and two half notes. Each key is equiped with two reeds (D = double reeds) in middle and low octave to give a full, carrying sound. Due to the specific construction the two reeds can not be used separately, though, thus the Compactina does not have any register stops. The instrument has four built-in drone stops. Apart from that any desired drone can be produced easily by putting half clothe-pegs on top of the keys. The bellows are open to the top. They fold out an fill themselves automatically when unlocked. You just need to pull them towards yourself for playing - always against a little resistence, though.

Size: height 28 cm, width 56 cm, depth 18 cm
Weight (without wooden box): 6.9 kg

PALOMA is he international brand name for instruments from Haribhau Vishwanath. This manufacturer resides in Mumbai (formerly Bombay) and was established in 1925 as a small repair shop. In the past decades Haribhau Vishwanath has developed into one of India's leading harmonium makers. In addition they also produce some string and percussion instruments. Thanks to a good infrastructure and a long experience in the craft and in international shipping Haribhau is able to supply all common harmonium models at a constantly high level of workmanship. Furthermore Haribhau takes pride in coming up with new ideas and inventions like the harmonium Compactina and the wax treatment of instruments' surfaces. India Instruments has established a regular partnership with Haribhau in 2005.

The harmoniums are not always tuned to Western a = 440 Hertz. In many cases they are set slightly higher to a = 442 Hertz. However, bigger variations up or down can occur as well. This can cause problems in playing together with Western instruments with fixed tuning (e.g. piano).

SHRUTI BOX - SURPETI

CONSTRUCTION

The shrutibox, also called surpeti, produces a powerful, carrying drone sound and is extremely easy to play. It is ideally suited for accompanying any kind of Indian music, voice work, modal improvisation or overtone singing, or Indian wind instruments, especially the bansuri (bamboo flute). Sound and tone production are similar to that of a harmonium or an accordion: metal reeds inside the instruments are caused to vibrate by compressed air passing by them. The air movement is controlled by two bellows on both sides of the instrument. One side carries 13 levers. Opening them allows the air to stream out from the inside and causes the reed underneath the lever to produce a note. The shrutibox covers a full octave of 13 chromatic half notes. That way you can freely choose a tonic that best suits your specific requirements. For a particularly rich and full sound it is advisable to add a fifth or a lower fourth to the tonic. Any other combination is possible as well, of course.

Its advantage over the harmonium is:

  • small and hence much lighter
  • the drone notes are fixed and hence less prone to mistakes especially by untrained players
  • It costs less
  • It's easy to transport
  • It's easily tuneable

PLAYING TECHNIQUE

The shrutibox can be played with one hand either sitting or standing or even walking. First you have to open the side levers that lock the whole instrument. Then you open the levers for the desired notes - this side should be facing you. Now put your hand on top of the instrument and press the side without the levers towards yourself. The volume can be adjusted by varying the tempo and pressure applied to the bellows. When you loosen the pressure of your fingers the bellows will automatically unfold and you can press again to get a continuous sound. If you slip your hand through the handle on top of the instrument you can carry and play it at the same time with just one hand. Alternatively you can also put a strap through the handle and hang it around your neck.

KALIMBA - MBIRA - SANZA - SANSULA - THUMB PIANO - DUIMPIANO

application:
use a kalimba on a frame dum

luister even mee ... listen to the Sansula

Instrument history tellers from South Africa like to use. The kalimbas are also called a thumb piano, Mbira, or Sanza. The specialty is in the way different vibrations are created. KAL-9 has two holes in the bottom to create a vibrato. The KAL-SAN is the Stradivarius of the kalimbas with the magical over-tones. The KAL-SAN can be set in your lap and the player can move it up and down to create a variety of over-tones and vibrations. No matter which tune is played it will be a spherical sound, vibration waves and wonderful rhythms.

KALIMBAS WITH MASSIVE BODY:

KAL-0
The Kalimba KAL-0 is ideal for those who do not want to be without an instrument wherever they may be.
This is our smallest model and is fitted with five tines mounted on a solid mahogany block. The sound of the instrument can be amplified by laying it on or sticking it onto a tabletop or the skin of a drum. A bright and clear f-minor triad is produced by plucking the tines with the thumbs. As all the notes harmonize with each other, beginners also enjoy immediate success with their instrument.
Measurements: 95 x 73 x 32mm

NL: pocket-kalimba op massief blok, 5 noten, f-pentatonisch.

KAL-70
The Kalimba KAL-70 is the ‘sister’ of the KAL-90 an is likewise a small and handy instrument with a solid resonance corpus of American cherrywood. The measurements of both instruments are the same but the tuning, number and breadth of the tines differ. Due to the deeper tones of the seven pentatonically-tuned tines, the vibrations are felt particularly strongly in the hands. For this reason, the KAL-70 is especially favored by therapists. The sound of the instrument can be amplified by laying it on or sticking it onto a tabletop or the skin of a drum. The tuning of the Kalimba KAL-70 is pentatonic C. The sounds produced are therefore always in harmony and so beginners also enjoy immediate success with their instrument.
Measurements: 117 x 90 x 41mm

NL: pocket-kalimba op massief blok in kerselaar, 7 noten, a-pentatonisch.

KALIMBA WITH RESONANCE BODY:

KAL-9 (KALIMBA CLASSIC)
It all began with the Kalimba Classic. At that time our only product was simply called ‘Kalimba’. Today, however, we offer a range of different versions and so we have renamed the original instrument ‘Kalimba Classic’. We have been producing this instrument for over 20 years. While the outward appearance has hardly changed, we have constantly worked on improving details.
Like all our Kalimbas, the Classic can easily be played from the start. By plucking the tines with the thumbs, melodies can be composed immediately and creatively varied. The underside of the mahogany body has two finger holes which produce a vibrato effect when covered/uncovered. The nine-tone set of tines is tuned to an a-minor pentatonic scale. As all the notes harmonize with each other, beginners also enjoy immediate success with their instrument.
Measurements: 178 x 149 x 63mm

KALIMBA-SANSULAS:
The fairyteller instrument, that almost plays by itself. Traditionally coming from the Griots in Africa. The Sansula is a Kalimba on a drum skin. Its enchanting and wondrous minor-tuning has found thousands of enthusiasts worldwide. When you play it, resting on your lap, some spherical-effects can be made by lifting up and putting down the instrument on your lap.

KAL-SAN (SANSULA BASIC)
The Sansula belongs to the family of the Kalimba and can be played just as easily. The instrument, with its patented suspended mounting of the resonating block, is an innovation entirely of our own design. Since its launching in 2001, the Sansula has quickly become a best-seller and found thousands of friends at home and abroad.
The special feature of the Sansula is its unbelievable sound. Whereby the clear and aesthetic design is most appealing. The oval frame of laminated beech wood is fitted with a membrane which, together with the resonating block, produces a prolonged, soft tone. Furthermore, an impressive ‘wah-wah’ effect can be produced by holding the instrument against the body, on the thigh or laying it on a table and then alternately raising and lowering it while playing. The tuning – in a-minor with additional tines pitched at B and F – allows wonderful melodies to be produced almost of their own accord, simply by plucking the tines with the thumbs. As all the notes harmonize with each other, beginners also enjoy immediate success with their instrument.
Note: because of the delicate membrane, this Sansula Basic model is not suitable for small children. We offer the Sansula Deluxe and the Sansula Renaissance as a more robust alternative.
Measurements: 198 x 155 x 67mm

KAL-SADE (SANSULA DELUXE)
The Sansula Deluxe is a further development of the Sansula Basic. In response to the wishes expressed by many customers, we have fitted it with a robust membrane of genuine goatskin and an adjustable tension device. These modifications greatly increase the range of possibilities of the instrument. The natural materials used make each of the Deluxe models supplied unique, characterized by an even richer and warmer sound while at the same time being more robust.
Whereas the basic Sansula model is too delicate for use by small children, the Sansula Deluxe can be used in nurseries and music schools without fear of the instrument being easily damaged. The Sansula Deluxe must, however, be handled with the same reasonable care as all musical instruments. The tuning – a-minor with additional tines pitched at B and F – allows wonderful melodies to be produced almost of their own accord, simply by plucking the tines with the thumbs. As all the notes harmonize with each other, beginners also enjoy immediate success with their instrument.

KAL-REN (SANSULA RENAISSANCE)
This year we are pleased to present an interesting product innovation. The Sansula Renaissance is a particularly robust model, fitted with hard-wearing REMO (USA) membrane. Due to this innovation, the Renaissance is not only insensitive to moisture but also suitable for use by children.

The Sansula Renaissance has been developed to combine the best features of the other models in one.
While the Sansula Basic instrument has a relatively delicate membrane, the Renaissance is fitted with a robust REMO (USA) drum skin. The Sansula Renaissance is resistant to moisture, so it retains its tension under conditions of varying air humidity and thus also retains its wonderful sound. Furthermore, the new membrane is now much more robust. The instrument can be used in children’s nurseries and play groups without the risk of it being easily damaged. The appearance of the Sansula Renaissance differs from that of the other models in that it is fitted with a rounded wooden rim. Most importantly, the Sansula Renaissance has inherited the indescribable sounds of the Sansula Basic.
The tuning of the instrument, in a-minor with additional B and F, allows wonderful melodies to be produced, almost by themselves, by plucking the tines with the thumbs.
Measurements: 198 x 155 x 67mm

WIND CHIMES - WINDORGEL - WINDKLOK - WINDBEL - CARILLONS

The 'Shanti' chime is an authentic musical instrument, an original creation of high quality. Hand made in the Pyrenees mountains, each chime is the result of meticulous craftsmanship. Eight chords are welded with silver into the metal plate at the base of the resonance tube. Precise tuning creates a play of clear tones that is rich in overtones. The overtones of the shorter chords gradually dominate and become fundamentals, thus forming a circular tone range. Shanti chimes come in several tunings, each with its specific magic timbre, and in seven basic colours with a choice of different shades. Move the chime gently holding it by its cord: the crystalline, relaxing sound may leave you in quiet wonder. Outside, sheltered from rain, as it plays with the wind it will carry you away on an unexpected melody. All chimes are the same size. The length of the tube is 125mm; the diameter is 65mm.

Alle chimes zijn even groot.

"The Quisca Cactus, which provides the magical body for the rainstick, grows in the Atakama desert at the foothills of the Andes. These cactus live in forests and hold water while they are alive. After they have completed their life cycle, their body dries out and can be used as this magical instrument. The spines are removed, turned around and inserted into the cactus which is then filled with pebbles of different sizes. If you turn the cactus instrument around the pebbles flow over the spines at different speeds, creating the wonderful sound of rain."

SPRING DRUM

The Spring Drums’ sound is generated by moving the drum (coil facing downwards) so the vibrations of the spring are transmitted through to the head. The almost indescribable and musically interesting sound has been described as a cross between a cuica, a sheet of thunder, a suspended cymbal roll, and the roar of a lion.

To play it simply grasp the body of the instrument in one hand and shake it with a twisting motion, thus allowing the spring to vibrate. You can create a variety of effects by placing the opposite hand over the top and by scraping the spring or striking the spring while it is in motion.

MONDHARP - MOUTH HARP - JAW HARP - JEW'S HARP - TRUMP - KHOMUS - DOROMB - DAN MOI

The Jew's Harp is a small musical instrument which is held against the teeth or lips, and plucked with the fingers. Its appearance in many cultures of the world, and ancient roots, attest to the magical essence of this simple instrument.

How to Play the Jew's Harp:

  1. The Jew's Harp consists of a cast iron or steel frame and a tempered steel tongue. The tongue of the instrument lies between the jaws of the frame and is played by vibrating the tongue, which is done by striking or plucking, with the forefinger.
  2. Take the Jew's Harp lightly in the hand, using care that the hand touches only the frame and not the tongue.
  3. Place the harp against the front teeth, which must be slightly apart.
  4. The upper and lower lips should rest on the top and bottom of the frame.
  5. With your forefinger, pluck the tongue of the Jew's Harp, either by pushing or pulling. While the harp's tongue is in motion, silently pronounce the vowels (A-E-I-O-U). This is an easy way to learn how to produce sounds, which occur by altering the size of the mouth cavity. Using small amounts of air (either inhaling or exhaling) will alter the sound quality. Moving your tongue (thus changing the size of the mouth cavity) and using small amounts of air will, in no time at all, produce many different tones. You then combine this with the rhythmic beat of the music.

DAN MOI (Vietnam)

The Dan Moi is the traditional jew's harp of the Vietnamese mountain people Hmong. Hand-made by a small number of excellent local craftsmen, this brass instrument captivates even novices by being easily playable and having a brilliant sound, rich in overtones. Playing the Dan Moi is effortless and enjoyable. In contrast to other types of trumps, the Dan Moi must not be pressed against ones teeth to produce its full and warm sound. Rather, the instrument is gently rested against the player's lips with one hand while the other plucks the tip of the reed softly.

Moreover, the Dan Moi affords players with an almost unlimited range of possibilities for the creation of sound effects since mouth and tongue are given considerably more freedom than with other types of trums. For example, you may try a simple echo effect by temporarily and rhythmically removing the Dan Moi from your lips, or try a tremolo by moving the tip of your tongue inside your mouth while playing.

The Hmong craftsmen work the Dan Moi so carefully that the slit between frame and reed is barely visible. This ensures a wide variety of sounds, especially in the high ranges.

luister even mee ... listen to the magical bow

The "Arco del Duende" (the bow of the little people) is an instrument created by Bolivian shaman Don Agustin Rivas Vasquez from a vision he received in an Ayahuasca ceremony. By placing one's mouth at the end-piece and plucking the strings, one can create incredible sounds and overtones which are wonderful for journeying and meditating, as well as healing. Similar to Jew's harp, the mouth and then the whole body becomes the resonating box for the instrument, allowing the player to vibrate together with spirits in vision-states, or with a client in a healing session. This instrument is used to invoke spirits by "seducing" them with the beautiful melodies, and providing a bridge of sound (vibration) between this world and other worlds. Don Agustin uses it with his intention to perform spiritual surgery and banish darkness. Length 78 cm.

Examples of tuning: C/F/C/F - C/F/C/Eb - A/D/A/C
